Advantages and Disadvantages of External Recruitment

Companies all over the world have to do recruitments because company’s without employees are similar to a human being without blood as just like blood circulation is necessary for the human body in the same way employees are necessary for the survival of the company. External recruitment is one of the ways in which the company can recruit employees; it refers to that recruitment in which the company hires candidates for various positions in the company from outside the company. In order to understand more about external recruitment, one should look at the advantages and disadvantages of external recruitment –

Advantages of External Recruitment

Selection from Pool of Talent

The first and foremost advantage of this process is that companies can hire the best talent from a vast pool of talent available in the market which in turn can prove to very beneficial for the company in the long term as opposed to internal recruitment where company has limited options as company has to hire employees from within the company.

Young Talent and Creative Ideas

Another benefit of this process is that company can hire young talent who in turn bring with them fresh air of energy as well as creative ideas which can prove to be very handy for the company as young people always have that extra energy and creative mind which older or middle age people lack and it is that energy, if channelized properly, can bring a lot of positive change in the company.

Unbiased

Another advantage of this process is that it is unbiased implying that only qualified candidates are selected because in case of internal recruitment biasedness creeps in as employees know each other and superiors tend to favor their own people leading to an unfair selection of people which in the long run will hurt the company.

Disadvantages of External Recruitment

Time Consuming

The biggest disadvantage of external recruitment is that it takes a lot of time because the company has to visit many colleges or universities or placement fairs and there also the company has to take various tests as well as conduct interviews and then do backgrounds checks on selected individuals which is a time-consuming process. In simple words, if the company is in hurry for recruitments than internal recruitment is a far better option as compared to external recruitments.

Expensive

Another drawback of this process is that it is very expensive because the company has to pay for various expenses of recruiters who go from one place to another for recruitments. In simple words, if the vacancy is for 1 or 2 positions than it is better to go for internal recruitments as the process as well as expenses of external recruitment remains same whether it’s for 5 vacancies or 500 vacancies.

Demotivating for Existing Employees

If talented individuals are working in the company and company goes outside for recruitments than it can be demotivating for existing employees as they will feel that even after working for so many years for the company they are not getting the opportunity and people who are younger and have less experience are coming in the company as their superiors.

As one can see from the above that external recruitment has advantages as well as disadvantages and that is the reason why any company thinking of doing external recruitments should carefully read above points and then take the decision whether to do this process of recruitment or not.
